Comic Books and Other Book Celebrations!

Updated: 3 days ago

What is Free Comic Book Day?

Simply put, Free Comic Book Day was created to remind people who aren’t regular visitors to their local comic store that there’s no reason they can’t become regular visitors to their local comic store.

Free Comic Book Day is an annual event happening on the first Saturday of May every year, organized by Diamond Comic Distributors designed to promote comic books and comic book retailers to the general public, with over 2,000 stores taking part.

EVERY comic bookstore in all FIFTY states participate in this annual event. So where can you go in the Twin cities?

Most years, my son and I start the day at Source Comics and Games . They have the best door prizes and usually free food giveaways such a chips or popcorn and soda. They also always have lots of professional Cosplayers in and outside the store. Look for tables of local comic book creators selling their wares inside the store. Skip the endless line for the cash register and buy from them instead.

Some years we wear costumes and sometimes we don't. Either way you will fit in.

Feel free to join me if you wish.

because Level Up is in St Paul and nearby.

Then I go over to Hot Comics, their Richfield location. https://www.hotcomicsandcollectibles.com/

The staff is extremely friendly and happy to help you find anything you need. They already have the most affordable Nerd Toys in town. An action figure for less than $10? from the 1900's ? Only at Hot Comics, is it possible. Depending on the year, they are likely to ALSO find local artists such as Dave Wheeler

My final stop of the day is Dreamer's Vault, Minneapolis location, again, because of friendly staff.

Every year, I plan on collecting about 30 comics with multiple copies of the ALL AGES comics. Then, I give away 1 comic to each of my students in the Axolotl room. Any Teen comics I get by accident will be donated to E2.

Free Comic Book Day and Graphic Novels are MORE THAN just super heroes.

See the full list at ...

If I collect more than 30 All AGES comics, I will donate a few copies to other E1 classrooms.

Other Local Comic Stores I love:

https://mindseyecomics.com/ Only Black owned comic book shop in the Twin Cities!

https://www.blackgarnetbooks.com/about Black owned bookstore. They are NOT participating in Free Comic Book Day. However, they have a robust anime, Manga, and graphic novel section that centers Bipoc stories, LBTQ characters, and other awesomeness! If you haven't been there yet (they're in the Midway area) , I highly recommend it! Such a beautiful space with so many Children's Books!
