Axolotl News #1 For New Students

Welcome to Obama Montessori,

Our E1 classroom is called the Axolotls. It is a place where first, second and third graders can work together to learn together.

A little about me:

I’ve been teaching since 1996 as an elementary teacher. Starting in 2012, I received my first of multiple Montessori degrees. I believe that social education is even more important than the academic, elementary school is where we learn to make friends, find a place to belong, and discover our unique gifts as humans on this planet, and that mistakes are GREAT ! It is truly the only way to learn. I look forward to meeting each every one of you and your child(ren) and working together as a community over the next 3 years.

More from the Obama Montessori webpage:

Peter Avirom is an elusive figure often found scaling walls and leaping buildings in a single bound. When he’s not fighting for justice as a caped crusader or writing books for children, he can be found in his Montessori classroom at J.J. Hill for students in grades 1,2, and 3.

As a child, he gained his talent for writing stories for children when a freak science experiment exploded nearby his comic book collection. Peter has been teaching children since 1996 and has never lost his joy for reading nor his enthusiasm for learning new things. He hopes both will be contagious.

When he’s not teaching, writing, or flying over Gotham City, he can be found buying too many children’s books at Red Balloon, guzzling coffee at Yellow Bird, or exploring the city by roller skates with his sidekicks: son, Isaac, wife, and their two insatiable cats. He also enjoys video games, board games, comic books, basketball, chess, improv, reading, basketball, and graphic novels.

Welcome BACK Axolotls !

I am excited to welcome you to Room 2204 at Obama Montessori and to start our school year together! It will be great to see all of the familiar faces and welcome all of the new families and students into our community. We are busy in the building setting up our new classrooms for your arrival.

Here are a few things to think about.

Open House:

Our Obama Montessori Open House is this Thursday, August 28th from 4:30-6:00pm. This is an opportunity to see our beautiful building and to connect with staff and friends. I am looking forward to meeting each of you! After visiting, you are invited to enjoy a cup of ice cream from 2 Scoops and play on our playground!

Note: Parking is limited to street parking, so please consider biking or walking if you live in the neighborhood.

Confirming Transportation Information:

Please be prepared to confirm transportation information on Thursday. It is very important your child knows how they are getting home, not just on the first day, but every day. I will use the information on Campus to create our classroom dismissal chart. Please be prepared to confirm this information with me on Thursday night. If you're unable to attend on Thursday night, please send me an email confirming that your child's transportation information is correct in Campus. If you're unsure, reach out and we'll figure it out together.

School Supplies:

Thanks to our FSO (Family and Staff Organization), families at our school do NOT need to buy school supplies. Your child should plan to bring a

backpack and tennis shoes for gym class. Please label these items with your child’s first initial and last name. This helps us return any lost items.

Upcoming FUN RUN:

The Obama Family and Staff Organization (FSO) is already getting ready for the 2025 FUN RUN! The event will take place on Friday, October 10th. The FSO will be providing free t-shirts for all students this year. Please fill out this form to get the correct shirt size for each of your students. Thank you!

Please reach out with any questions you may have or anything you would like me to know going into this new school year.

Peace,

Mr. Peter
