Axolotl Update 2-5-25

Writer: Teacher PeterTeacher Peter

Updated: Feb 12

Helpful Reminders:

Please DO send your child to school with:

  • a full water bottle that closes securely.

  • Their own healthy snack.

  • a book fro home that they like.

  • Anything else? Please ask first.

Please DO NOT send to school

  • No gum, candy, or sugary sweets nor junk food.

  • No toys

  • No school supplies unless you have spoken with the teacher first.

  • We try to provide a distraction free environment in the Montessori classroom and watches, toys, even pens or pencils can be a distraction if it is "too special" an item. We provide pencils, notebooks, folders, and all the learning materials that your child may need.

Snacks:

Bobos
Bobos

We are a peanut and peanut butter free classroom. Some of our students (and me) have allergies to gluten, dairy, or lactose. So it's nice to have SOME Gluten Free or Dairy Free options, but it doesn't need to be every item. Also, having things individually wrapped is helpful. Examples: fruit is "naturally" wrapped and fruit snacks are always great.

Here are some examples of snacks we love:

  1. Bobos (Pictured above)

  2. fresh fruit, such as oranges

  3. Meat sticks

  4. fruit snacks

  5. Graham crackers (and napkins to serve them on)

  6. any BAR! Granola, etc. (but no peanuts!)

Birthdays:

On their birthday, we will sing to your child, invite them to wear the birthday hat, and invite them to choose TWO snacks on that day.

We are a healthy school so please do not bring cupcakes, candy, or any sugary sweets.

If you really want to provide a gift for the classroom, please consider sending a special snack, or better yet, a non-food item.

Children love stickers, stationary, pencils, and other small items.

Recess Expectations

In general, students need to be prepared to go outside every day, rain or shine. In winter, coats, gloves and hats are mandatory. We have extra ! Need some, just ask. Have extra? Please donate in the office. We have children ages 4-12 who would LOVE an extra pair.

Year round helpful Gear:

It is nice to have outdoor boots, dry indoor shoes, a bag of dry clothes with a spare top, bottom, socks, and underwear because WE'RE KIDS and accidents happen. Snow pants in winter is helpful when there is snow on the ground.

Health:

Our classroom and school community has had many students absent with a variety of symptoms (fevers, coughing, vomiting, nausea etc.).  Please monitor your student for these symptoms and keep them home to prevent the spread of illness within out classroom.

A reminder, if your student has a fever, they need to be free of fever 24 hours WITHOUT fever reducing meds before returning to school.  In addition, if your student is vomiting, they should stay home.  Students can return to school after they have been free of vomiting for 24 hours.

If your student is confirmed to have a case of any infection disease (Influenza A, strep throat, norovirus, covid, etc.  Please notify the health office at 651-888-7639.

SPPS's protocol for notification for school illnesses can be found here.

Valentines Day:

St. Paul Public Schools does not recognize Valentines Day in the classroom. At J.J. Hill we normally use that day to talk about friendship and/or another opportunity to make cards for people we love.

Is Valentine's Day even a good idea for children?
